How to find a bookmark you cannot remember
Published 2026-11-08
Most people can describe a saved page long before they can recall its title: "that article about sleep and memory". Folders and keyword search both fail on that kind of memory. Here is the order to try things in.
1. Search your browser bookmarks by any word you remember
Browser search matches words in the title and address, so try a distinctive word from the site name or the topic. It is quick, but it only works when the exact word is there.
2. Check your history
If you opened the page recently, your browser history keeps its title and address. Search it for the topic or the site, and filter by date if your browser allows it.
3. Search by meaning
A bookmark tool with search by meaning compares what you describe with what each saved page is about, so you do not need the right word. Describing the idea in a sentence is usually enough.
Make the next search easier
- Add a one-line note when you save something important, saying why you saved it.
- Let tags be applied automatically instead of building folders you will not maintain.
- Clear out dead links now and then so results are not cluttered.
